The current Porta Castellana (Castle’s Gate) of Moresco, characterized by a striking neo-Gothic archway, doesn’t dates from the Middle Ages but from the second half of the 19th century. It was built on the site of the demolished Church of Santa Maria in Castro, which was then transformed into the main pedestrian access to the castle to facilitate the passage to the Church of Santi Lorenzo and Nicolò. Today, it is the usual entrance for visitors: through the brick archway lies a vaulted staircase — the only surviving element of the ancient church’s nave — leading to the picturesque village square.
