In Piazza Castello once stood the Church of Santa Maria in Castro, one of the oldest places of worship in Moresco, built in the 13th century within the city walls. Originally composed of two naves, only the left one remains today; it was once reserved for women and was later transformed into the present portico. The elegant octagonal pillars bear witness to a structural renovation that took place in the 16th century.

Declared unsafe in the early 19th century, the church was demolished in 1866, and the Church of Santi Lorenzo e Nicolò was built with the salvaged materials. Only the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace survives from the original structure, housing a valuable fresco by Vincenzo Pagani depicting the Madonna and Child along several Gospel scenes — an artistic testimony of extraordinary value to the village.
